Another ultra-high vacuum system dedicated to investigations on the origin of Charon’s red pole and the Surface-Exosphere relations on icy satellites such as Europa. This chamber houses an OFHC Cu sample holder with embedded (i) gold-coated quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) (top) and (ii) IR-transparent Si or CsI window (bottom). The QCM is a key instrument that we use repeatedly to measure absolute column density of the condensed films to within ~ 0.1 ML accuracy. The front gold electrode of the QCM also enables visible and infrared reflectance spectroscopy of the ice films.
